The Everything Book/Ready, Set, 4th of July

Allison and I  thought about renaming the products in our Ready Set series The Everything Book(s).  Seems like speech-language pathologists by their nature are a very creative group. Many of our colleagues have shared new and varied ways to use the books.  Today an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) therapist said that she loves using Ready, Set, Me! with her children who are using devices.  First they make their choice using the book then find their answer on their device. Another colleague mentioned that she uses the pictures for categorization.

Jaclyn, my co-worker in Pueblo, said her child uses the story generated at the end of the manipulative version to communicate with his grandparents in Oregon on Face Time. The story is based on his choices, giving him the structure and visual support to share personal information.  I think it would be a great tool in a social skills group.  Each child could share the his/her choice then peers could ask questions to find out more details.

Check out the series on Teachers Pay Teachers.  So far we have 2 free books, 3 of the 4 seasons and 6 holidays. Here is our latest product:

Ready, Set, Summer

I like to stay a little ahead of the season/holiday when creating products for Teachers Pay Teachers. So here is Ready, Set, Summer.

I really enjoy naming the children in the Ready Set series. Often I use the names of children I see in therapy. In this product, I used the names of friends' children.  Whitney is Julie and Nathan's Chinese daughter.  She is 24 years old and working as a chemist.  Tyler is my friend Luann's son. He is in osteopathic school. I hope this product gives the children you see in therapy a lot to talk about.

Ready, Set, Mother's Day

There are not many children's books and activities specifically designed for Mother's Day so I hope you enjoy this product.  In this story, Kayla and Darius plan a very special day for their mothers.  Here are a few pages from the easy assembly version.

I really like using the manipulative version with children who have very limited language. It allows them to take part in the story and provides a heart-warming story for the child to share with his/her mother.

Ready, Set, Spring/Ready, Set, Winter

Ready, Set, Spring

Allison did a wonderful job of creating Ready, Set, Spring.  Check out both the easy assembly and manipulative version at our store on Teachers Pay Teachers.

Ready, Set, Winter

Although it is officially spring, it feels more like winter in Colorado.  We are currently in the midst of a blizzard with white-out conditions in Pueblo. Here are a few pages from the easy assembly version of Ready, Set, Winter.

The manipulative version allows the child to actively engage in listening activities and choice making.

Ready, Set, Valentine's Day

Join Morgan and Hunter as they get ready for Valentine's Day.  Here are a few pages from the easy assembly version.

Ready, Set, Valentine's Day is also available in a manipulative version.

Ready, Set, Halloween

Allison and I have been working on completing our Ready Set series. Ready, Set, Halloween was fun to create because children love this holiday and there is a lot to talk about. In addition, I found wonderful graphics on the My Cute Graphics website.  Thank you Laura Strickland for making your graphics available to educators.

Once again, we created both an easy assembly version and a manipulative version of our product. The manipulative version requires Velcro for assembly.  Take a look at both products at our store on Teachers Pay Teachers. Here are a few pages from the easy assembly version.

The manipulative version has boxes for the child to give the boy and girl in the story his and her choice as well as to make a choice of his own.  The child's choices can then be placed into a personalized story that is taken home for additional practice and enjoyment.

Ready Set Me/Ready Set Birthday

You can get a feel for the Ready Set series by downloading a free copy of Ready, Set, Me! and Ready, Set, Birthday on the Teachers Pay Teachers website. In these products, the child points to his/her choice or choices.

Ready, Set, Easter

Esperanza and Jose select what they want for Easter.  For example: the color they want to  dye their egg, where their Easter hunt will be, what they will wear on Easter Sunday, etc. I saw a co-worker develop an amazing dialogue with a language impaired kid using Ready, Set, St. Patrick's Day.  That's the main purpose of this series, to provide the visual support for children to engage in a conversation.  Don't just breeze through the book but expand, scaffold, problem solve, etc. to set up a rich interaction.

Ready, Set, Mother's Day is available at Teachers Pay Teachers.

To come:  Seasons (Ready Set Spring - Summer - Fall - Winter), Ready Set Halloween, Ready Set Thanksgiving, Ready Set Valentine's Day

Ready Set St. Patrick's Day

I started my Ready Set Series with a Halloween book in 2011. It allowed young children with very little language to talk about the holiday. My book was loosely based on an old book by Edith Kunhardt, Which One Would You Choose?  In her story, a boy and a girl choose the shirt they wear in the morning, the color of their toothbrush, what they eat for breakfast, etc. I have always loved this book. It allows children with very little expressive language to participate in the story.

In my series, I have enhanced the child's participation in the story by attaching the pictures with Velcro.  The child gives the girl her choice, the boy his choice, then makes a choice of his/her own.  In the end, the child's choices are made into a book that is copied and taken home for additional practice.

The series has become a very popular therapy tool in my clinic.  Children stay engaged in the story because they are doing something with their hands and the topic is exciting and meaningful.  The speech therapist can easily incorporate work on goals such as holiday vocabulary, sentence formation, WH questions, verb tense, pronouns and adjectives.  Children love to share their book with family members resulting in lots of practice.

  Ready, Set, St. Patrick's Day

I have developed a manipulative version and an easy assembly version of my Ready Set products.  The manipulative version requires Velcro and takes some time to assemble.  The easy assembly version looks similar to Ready, Set, ME! requiring the child to point to his/her response.
